Sebastian Pilgrim

“To König Marke, Sebastian Pilgrim gave all his authority and the force of his voluminous bass. Vocally he owed nothing to his part and inspired with great authority in voice and playing. His dynamic range and lyrics were exemplary. Pilgrim showed very impressively how powerful this composition can be when suitable voice size and creative intelligence meet. With every syllable of his knowing singing, the atmosphere of the performance changed. Suddenly a formative center point could be experienced. A splendidly sung and designed role portrait!"

Not only his under the skin Hagen but also his brilliant role debut as  König Marke in the new production of ‘Tristan und Isolde’ in Leipzig shows that this young black bass is on his way to a world career. One can be excited about his debut as La Roche (‘Capriccio’). Another highlight of this season in Leipzigshould be his debut as Gurnemanz in spring 21 – cancelled because of Corona. The young singer already made his debut at the Nationaltheater Mannheim as Hagen (‘Götterdämmerung’) in summer 2016 with great success. This was followed in June 2017 by his debut as Hunding at the Wagner Days in Budapest under the direction of Adam Fischer. In 2017/18, he made his debuts as Rocco in the new production of ‘Fidelio’ in Mannheim and as König Karl in Schubert’s ‘Fierrabras’ at La Scala in Milan.

From the 2018/19 season, he will be a member of the ensemble of the Leipzig Opera, where he performed such roles as the Großinquisitor (‘Don Carlo’), Landgraf (‘Tannhäuser’), Eremit (‘Der Freischütz’), Kezal (‘Die verkaufte Braut’), Fasolt and Hagen. In spring 2019, he was invited again to La Scala in Milan.

In autumn 2020, he should make his role debut at the Oper Leipzig: König Heinrich in ‘Lohengrin’(cancelled due Corona) in a new production by Katharina Wagner. Then the 36-year-old exceptional bass has all the great Wagner roles except Daland in his repertoire.

Corona has also taken many important debuts from him in the 20/21 season as Gurnemanz in Wagner's Parsifal, La Roche in Strauss ‘Capriccio and as Diener/Greis in Ullmann's “Sturz des Antichrists”. With a cautious outlook, however, these operas have "only" moved back on the calendar. At least he was able to show once again with his Hagen in the “Ring an einem Abend” in April 2021 in Leipzig what an extraordinary bass is.
